Car Hits Raccoon, Another Raccoon Drags Body to Side of Road

I witnessed something so sad, yet very profound tonight. I was walking my dog Cody this evening when I came across a group of young men standing on a street corner. To the left I could see a dead animal in the road.

I called out to the men to ask if it was a coyote that had been hit. They said no, that it was a raccoon.

That raccoon was about the size of a medium size dog. Apparently, a car hit it while it was trying to cross the street. The car kept going.

As an animal lover, it pained me to see an animal who had been killed in such a way. The young men said that there was another raccoon trying to drag the body of the dead family member to the side of the road; but there were still cars coming.

I shouted for the men to block traffic; which they did. The other raccoon grabbed it’s family member with it’s teeth, by the tail, and dragged it to the side; out of traffic, and into a water drainage hole.

What humanity I witnessed within the animal kingdom; to not leave their family member, and even risk death themselves to take the body away.

Hard not to choke back tears.
